And what a job it is to maintain life! We are mostly oblivious to it except for our use of senses such as sight, hearing, taste, smell, touch and it’s other unpleasant but necessary functions.
Mine has recently been invaded by a cold virus, so I am more aware of how it feels when it must call to arms it’s defense. Without my even having to think about it or issue any conscious commands! It does it all on it’s own.
Pretty uber fantastic, huh?
Anyway, so here’s the scoop on how a portion of the immune system functions-
Geez, that really makes me appreciate my body and what it's doing to keep me alive and still functioning while all I'm consciously concerned with is complaining about my runny nose and coughing, and maybe taking something to relieve the symptoms *sigh*
I’ve read where sleep is when your body concentrates on healing itself. I guess it is because you're not using it. Your body.
At the same time your brain isn't being used consciously so it is not distracted and, other than maintaining the regular essentials, it more efficiently can send out fighter cells to attack invaders.
A body is like a world unto itself, with organisms both living on and within it, some beneficial, some parasitic and destructive, everything is trying to keep a balance. Kind of like the earth. After all, we are made up of the same things, water, minerals, etc.
