'Hi. Coo, I’m a dove
Yesterday was haiku day Seems I have missed it' and here’s an alternative ending- 'Birds don’t write haikus' Try April 15th! April 15, 1865: Abraham Lincoln dies of gunshot wound to the head (Poor Abe the Bae <[no disrespect meant]. From what I've read he was an interesting and intelligent self-made man. I'm sure emancipation from slavery would have happened eventually, it is just a shame so many of our own had to die, and so much destruction wrought in the process. Seems that is always the cost of freedom... . . .) April 15, 1862: Congress enacted the first income tax law in 1862 to support the Civil War. (Another cost of a war that we are still paying for. I guess that is why today is the deadline <[interesting word in itself] to file [unless you apply for an extension, of course]?) Also on April 15th, 1952 Franklin National Bank issued the first bank credit card. (Demons to some, Angels to others....) April 15, 1912: The RMS Titanic, the “Unsinkable Ship” collides with an iceberg and sinks with the loss of Fifteen Hundred people. Seven hundred survived. (I wonder what James Cameron would be doing now if it hadn't occurred?) April 15, 1945: Franklin D. Roosevelt is buried on the grounds of his Hyde Park home. (Some events happening on April 15th were devastating. Others, not so much.) April 15, 1947: Jackie Robinson goes hitless in his major league debut (Initiated for the first time on April 15, 2004, MLB has adopted a new annual tradition, "Jackie Robinson Day", on which every player on every team wears #42. What a coincidence that his middle name was Roosevelt...) April 15, 1952: The U.S. performs a nuclear test at a Nevada Test Site. It wasn't the first test- ‘The site was established on 11 January 1951 for the testing of nuclear devices, covering approximately 1,360 square miles (3,500 km2) of desert and mountainous terrain. Nuclear testing at the Nevada Test Site began with a 1-kiloton-of-TNT (4.2 TJ) bomb dropped on Frenchman Flat on 27 January 1951. During the 1950s, the mushroom clouds from the 100 atmospheric tests could be seen for almost 100 mi (160 km). The city of Las Vegas experienced noticeable seismic effects, and the distant mushroom clouds, which could be seen from the downtown hotels, became tourist attractions. St. George, Utah, received the brunt of the fallout of above-ground nuclear testing in the Yucca Flats/Nevada Test Site. Winds routinely carried the fallout of these tests directly through St. George and southern Utah. Marked increases in cancers, such as leukemia, lymphoma, thyroid cancer, breast cancer, melanoma, bone cancer, brain tumors, and gastrointestinal tract cancers, were reported from the mid-1950s through 1980. The vast majority of nuclear tests, 828 in all, were underground. From 1986 through 1994, two years after the United States put a hold on full-scale nuclear weapons testing, 536 anti-nuclear protests were held at the Nevada Test Site involving 37,488 participants and 15,740 arrests, according to government records. Those arrested included the astronomer Carl Sagan and the actors Kris Kristofferson, Martin Sheen, and Robert Blake.’ (Wikipedia) (Has humankind learned to handle such power yet???? Will we ever?) April 15, 2013: The Boston Marathon Bombings.
There were two consecutive explosions on the sidewalk near the finish line, killing three spectators and injuring 264 others. It was the 117th edition of the event, with over 23,000 runners participating, and more than $800,000 in prize money being awarded. (No amount of prize money could ever replace those that lost lives and limbs....) That is what the Lincolns were watching when Abraham was shot by the actor John Wilkes Booth. I have to admit, I knew the basics of the assassination, everyone does, but it did not really interest me until, by chance, I found a CDV on ebay that looked like that infamous Booth. The UK seller had many UK and European noted actor and singer CDVs (Carte de Visite) but this was in a lot simply listed as 'miscellaneous'. I put the only bid in and won the lot for well under $20 even with shipping. (I am fascinated with early photography and photographica) That is when my interest was peaked and I read all I could about the assassination and those involved. There was a conspiracy that John Wilkes Booth was not the one shot and killed in Richard Garrett's barn by Thomas P. 'Boston' Corbett (a truly bizarre character), and the entire assassination, search for/apprehension of, trial and what followed, left many unanswered questions and strange inner-twining events. Anyway, the back of the CDV I acquired listed it was taken by the photographer Walter A. Smith in the UK, and on further investigation I found the photographer was in business AFTER John Wilkes Booth was killed. Curious. John's sister, Asia, moved to the UK shortly after the death of her brother, so the only conclusions I can come up with are either said photographer made copies of an already circulated CDV of Booth (although there are some slight differences between them, as you can see in the photos below), or it is someone who uncannily looks like and dressed like Booth and had the photograph taken, or it is, indeed, the actual John Wilkes Booth which would mean he was not the one shot and killed at Garrett's farm? There are many strange coincidences involving the Lincolns and the assassination, for instance it was none other than Edwin Booth (John's brother and fellow actor) that had previously rescued young Robert Lincoln when he had fallen from a train platform in Jersey City, New Jersey. And what happened to the missing pages that were torn from Booth's calendar/memo book but were never found? Also there is John Surratt, one of the co-conspirators and son of the executed Mary Surratt, who escaped and made his way to Egypt posing as a Canadian (there were many Canadians sympathetic towards the South during the Civil War) where he became a Papal Zouaves but was apprehended, arrested, returned to the U.S, exonerated and went on to do lectures. And, that after the death of their son, William Wallace Lincoln (whom it is believed mostly likely succumbed to typhoid fever which was prevalent at the time in Washington), Mary Todd Lincoln became interested in spiritualism and one of the 'psychics', Charles Colchester, that Mary visited and that visited her at the White House was also a friend of John Wilkes Booth and had, at least at one time, warned the President to be cautious. Also, take note, that Robert Todd Lincoln (Abraham and Mary Todd's eldest son) was contacted by two other Presidents just before they were assassinated, James Abram Garfield and William McKinley, both of whom it is said, had premonitions of their deaths similar to Abraham Lincoln's, thus their reason for wanting to speak with Robert. Actually, the original conspiracy was said not to assassinate the President, but to kidnap him and hold him as ransom in trade for the Confederate soldiers that were being held in prison by the North. Above is the picture I found online that resembles my CDV, and which I used as a comparison. Above is the front and back of the CDV I purchased from a UK Ebay seller. I do not know what was blackened out in the upper left hand corner, it was like that when I got it. There is a resemblance, whether or not it is or isn't John Wilkes Booth. People can appear differently from one photograph to another, as well as their appearance can change from year to year, if even ever so slightly. Was it all a conspiracy? Maybe? Maybe not... An interesting snippet-
Bedspread said to be from Lincoln's deathbed tested for bloodstains I should think it would be simpler to transplant just the brain, but maybe not? I was looking for horror film clips to add, but most dealt with completely disembodied heads, or two heads on one body. Did find this, though, an interview with Dr. White- (WARNING: Some very disturbing scenes!) Wait a minute, an interview with a renown neurosurgeon filmed at McDonalds??? And Dr. White has a reserved table there.
(I wonder if the Frankenstein's Monster bobble head was put on the desk purposely for the film?)
Thank goodness they opted for The Rivet One and not The Shatcycle!
James Tiberius Kirk you are awesomeness to the power of awesomeness!
(OK, so I used to think he was a pompous ass, but he has somehow transformed into a venerable, senescent, endearing dotard. Love you, Will Shatner <3 *HUGZ*) yeh, well try drawing with a white wax crayon on a white egg! So they are not da Vinci's....or any of the fancy eggs mentioned in an earlier post! They are only going to be deshelled and eaten.... ...with ketchup....ketsup...catsup....tomato condiment!!!!
can just lead to worry....which leads to depression....and other illnesses.
How to stop needless worry, stuff you can do nothing about? That is what I need to find out. I need to be oblivious to certain things. Concentrate on....what? Self? Or only day to day and not worry about the future? (Just build owl sculptures....yes, a 'Walking Dead' [the tv series] reference) It's not just my future, it's everyone's....and everyone after that. So, should I just let someone else deal with it? Blind faith in others and hope they are capable of sussing things out? I need answers!!!!! :( *sigh* Sorry, didn't have time to make a proper card been so busy. I kinda like this, though.
Maybe I'll eventually do 'the Bible in stick figures'...Adam and Eve, Cain slaying Abel, Noah etc. Just the biggies. Oooo, I can even do famous moments in history! Anyway, I apologize for being so late. Hope The Bunny, or Jesus, or Moses, brought you lots of chocolate! Mmm, chocolate. I love chocolate but if I eat too much break out in hives *sigh* It's worth it. Just like how it makes you feel like you're in love. Also worth it. When growing up, I only got white or pastel coloured 'chocolate' (it's a lie! It's not really chocolate at all!) in my basket. My sister got REAL chocolate :( She used to rub it in, too! Yeh, I'm the youngest. Sibling torment. (I was afraid of the eyes of potatoes when little so she'd stash one away until it had huge eye growths then hide it in my toy box. I'm ok with potatoes now. I know they can't really see me and their eyes are not stalking to seek me out or anything.) Geez, it's no wonder I startle easily! Anyhow, hope you had a happy day, whatever you did or didn't celebrate!
I may or may not have posted this elsewhere, but it's worth seeing again. House Special is a really brilliant group in creating CGI, Stop Motion and 2D Moving Illustrations. Check out more of their work HERE.
And BTW, it served the village right. Let this be a lesson....of some sort.... Oh! I know! 'Sticks and especially Stones may break one's bones?...um hows about 'Sticks and Boulders may break one's.....er....shoulders?' Some ideas for decorating- 20+ Creative Easter Egg Decoration Ideas (check the ones at the bottom of the article, too!) My Grams taught us how to make sort of marbled eggs using onion skins wrapped around them similar to the leaf ones in the article.
I've also made some using silhouettes that I cut out then dyed similarly. Plus traditional dyed eggs. I particularly like the galaxy eggs in the article!!! An Aunt of mine made these really cute 'egg ladies'. She painted faces and hair, similar to old dolls, on blown out egg shells, used cut out parts of the carton that she painted for the hat and a base, then added little beads, feathers and stuff for earrings/necklaces/hat adornments. So, be creative and have some eggciting fun! |
